Bruno Fernandes is pictured wearing a pair of protective boots and crutches after being substituted in Manchester United's FA Cup semi-final against Brighton.

Fernandes was replaced by Wout Weghorst after 101 minutes at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. He appeared frustrated at being sent off and was seen yelling at his teammates on the touchline during the final stages of a tense match.

United then secured their place in the final with a 7-6 penalty shootout win, but the victory appeared to have come at a cost. Fernandes appears to have sprained his right ankle on the pitch - and an Instagram post from his partner Ana Pinho suggests a disturbing sight for United fans. Fernandes is depicted lying on a sofa with a cup in his hand and resting his right foot on some pillows. At the front is a case of protective boots and crutches with the caption "reload".

The Portuguese midfielder played his 50th game of the season this weekend. He was almost always there on Erik ten Hag's team, often captaining the team in Harry Maguire's absence.

United have their next game on Thursday, when they travel north of London to take on Tottenham in the Premier League. No official updates have been given about Fernandes, but the photo suggests he is a big suspect for this and possibly others to come.

Ten Hag's side next face Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday before further games against Brighton and West Ham next week. The FA Cup final against Manchester City is scheduled for June 3.

United have been hit with a string of injuries. Victor Lindelof played alongside Luke Shaw at centre-back at Wembley with Maguire suspended, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane injured. Ten Hag revealed on Sunday that Varane is likely to qualify for the FA Cup final, but Martinez has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to an injury sustained during the 2-2 draw with Sevilla on May 13. Donny van de Beek is also out of the season with a serious knee injury, while Scott McTominay comes off injured and Alejandro Garnacho still feels like he will be back.

United are fourth in the Premier League, six points ahead of Tottenham with two games less. They were level on points with Newcastle, who played one more game after a 6-1 win over Spurs at the weekend.
