In the FA Cup semifinal penalty shootout at Wembley, Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst admits attempting to talk sense into Brighton midfielder Solly March before the latter missed from the spot.

When Victor Lindelof scored immediately after taking Brighton's seventh penalty, it cost Brighton dearly and forced United back to Wembley for the final in early June.

Following Weghorst's successful conversion, the 28-year-old, who has enjoyed a fantastic season for the Seagulls, took the penalty. The United striker believes that the words March received from him may have been a factor in March's missed shot.

Weghorst explained that although he had advised his teammates to try to throw the Brighton players off their game, only he had actually done so.

The Dutchman acknowledged, "I already told some of our guys do it before we started." "However, no one did. I made a goal, saw the ball, and attempted to gain a couple advantages to perhaps assist us win.

Weghorst even admitted that after the game, he genuinely felt bad for March because he was the only one of the 14 players from either team to fail to score in the stressful shootout.

"I approached him and spoke with him briefly before returning to him out of compassion for being the one who was missing. The United player stated, "I just tried everything, and usually it doesn't make a difference but maybe it did.

For the first time since Louis van Gaal oversaw an extra-time victory against Crystal Palace in 2016, Manchester United is attempting to win the FA Cup. On that particular day, Jesse Lingard scored the infamous winning goal to cap off his first season playing for the first team.

Jose Mourinho later led United back to the championship game in 2018, but Chelsea's Eden Hazard scored the game's lone goal at Wembley thanks to a Phil Jones error. In 2020, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer led United to the semifinals when Chelsea defeated them once more.
