After being spotted enjoying dinner with some of his former teammates in Catalonia on Monday, Lionel Messi has continued to fuel rumors that he would move back to Barcelona this summer.
After the 2022–2023 season, Messi's contract with Paris Saint-Germain is set to expire.
While the Argentine and his advisors had intended to speak to Barcelona this month about a potential return to his old club, 90min believes that PSG has acknowledged that it is doubtful that the Argentine will sign a new contract in the French capital.
Messi has been in Barcelona for the past two days, and on Sunday, during La Blaugrana's 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou, supporters sang his name.
On Monday evening, Jijantes released video purportedly showing the 35-year-old leaving a local eatery after dinner with ex-Barça colleagues Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Back in February, Messi dined with Busquets and Alba in Catalonia, though it seemed more likely that he would sign a new deal with PSG at the time.
Alba claimed it had never been a topic of conversation with Messi when she talked to Goal last week about the possibility of him returning to Barcelona.
"Leo makes the choice. We haven't really discussed this, but it's obvious that Messi wearing a shirt other than Barça's is always strange," he remarked.
"In the end, it's wonderful for me if he wants to and the club wants to. On the field, he has been the player I have connected with the most.
The club's president, Joan Laporta, promised that Messi would return in a recent interview with Cadena SER.
However, La Liga president Javier Tebas has emphasized that the club must sell players in order to bring in new ones if Barcelona is to adhere to budgetary requirements.
"Barça must make numerous financial sacrifices in order to register Messi. To make it happen, they must put in a lot of work, he said.
I don't think his signing is possible right now. However, there is still plenty of time for Barça to move to get Leo. We are currently waiting on Barcelona's feasibility plan. To make it happen, they must put up a lot of work. They can sell players, for sure, but they also need to register some players.
