Frank Lampard has urged the Chelsea team to start improving despite the possibility that they could finish in the bottom half of the Premier League standings.

In light of Chelsea's desire to hire Mauricio Pochettino as their new head coach, Frank Lampard urged the team to display "personal pride" and end the season well.

Reece James and Mason Mount are expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to injuries, Lampard said on Tuesday.

The club has endured a terrible season that has already seen two head coaches, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, lose their jobs. The departure of the England internationals is the latest setback.

Lampard, the team's interim manager, may also be removed before the season is done after he presided over four straight losses since being given the job by the club.

There might be a new leader in the next few days or weeks with Pochettino a strong contender to take over.

Lampard will captain Chelsea against fellow West London team Brentford on Wednesday, it is very probable.

Before that match, the Bees are astonishingly five points ahead of the affluent Blues, and Lampard wants to see a fighting attitude from his team in 11th position.

At the start of Tuesday's pre-game press conference, he delivered the depressing announcement of the latest injury setbacks, saying: "Reece James is unavailable definitely for the season, Mason Mount is the same - potential for the last game of the season but probably not - so that's obviously terrible for us.

They're important players. Mason has had a pelvic problem for a time, while Reece has a hamstring injury. He has generally tried, and the medical team has tried, but we are now at the point where he will undergo minor surgery and then a four-week recovery period.

When asked if former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain manager Pochettino might join the team, Lampard responded, "I'm not going to get involved in any future manager talk, because it's all speculation."
