PSG and Messi saga reaches final conclusion
weeks of negotiations, Paris Saint-Germain and Lionel Messi have reportedly failed to reach an agreement for a new contract, and the Argentine superstar is now expected to leave the Ligue 1 side after a two-year spell. According to Le Parisien,
PSG believes the contract talks broke down because Messi demanded more money, but his camp has denied that the issue was purely financial. Talks had dragged on since the World Cup, and at one point, it seemed like an agreement could be reached, but now it appears that Messi will be exiting the Ligue 1 outfit.
There have been rumours since Messi's departure from Barcelona that he would make a return to the club where he is arguably the best-ever player. Barcelona is said to be exploring ways to bring him back, and direct contact with Messi's representatives is ongoing, with a decision expected in the coming days.
However, it remains to be seen if a deal can be reached as Messi's PSG contract is set to expire in the summer, and the French club has an option to extend it by a further year, but this can only be triggered with the 35-year-old's agreement.
It is thought that Messi's father, Jorge, has been in constant contact with Barcelona officials as well as president Joan Laporta, who is working hard to get the deal over the line.
The return of Messi to Barcelona will not be an easy task as the club must take several financial measures to undertake his registration. According to La Liga president Javier Tebas, Barcelona needs a big effort to make it happen, and he does not see the signing as feasible at the moment. He added that Barcelona needs to submit a feasibility plan before anything can happen, and they have a lot of work to do to make it a reality.
It remains to be seen where Messi will go if he does not return to Barcelona, but he will undoubtedly have plenty of suitors. The superstar forward has had a successful two-year stint with PSG, scoring 45 goals in 76 appearances for the club. While PSG will no doubt be disappointed to lose Messi, they have a squad full of talent and are sure to have plans in place for the future. As for Messi, his next move is uncertain, but he will undoubtedly be looking for a new challenge as he enters the final years of his illustrious career.
