Manchester City have ramped up their interest in Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae as they look to sign him this summer, according to reports.
The South Korean international is likely to be brought in to replace Aymeric Laporte, who has been linked with a move to Barcelona.
Min-jae certainly has the quality to make it into Pep Guardiola's starting line-up but City will face competition for the defender's signature.
Indeed, as The Sun reports, Man Utd, Liverpool and Tottenham have joined Cityzens in pursuing Min-jae, who has impressed in Serie A this season.
In 30 appearances for Napoli in the league, the "monster" central defender has helped the home team keep 15 clean sheets, score 2 goals and have 2 assists. Now, Napoli are 17 points away from the top of the table and are on track to win their first championship since 1990 when Diego Maradona was captain of the Italian giants.
With that in mind, it's no surprise that City are pushing to sign Min-jae this summer, who has a relatively low £40m release clause in his current contract.
Laporte is said to join Barcelona
The moment Man City are interested in Min-jae publicly is quite timely as Laporte is also involved in a move.
As reports from Spain have reported, the 28-year-old is 'unsatisfied' at the Etihad after struggling to get consistent game time under Guardiola this season.
Laporte has only made eight Premier League appearances this season, significantly fewer than 33 games last season. Furthermore, the defender is said to 'dream' of playing for Barcelona one day so he will jump at the chance to sign for the Catalan side.
Therefore, it seems logical that Guardiola planned ahead and wanted to replace Laporte with Min-jae - a younger and arguably better player.
However, the only problem with Barcelona's pursuit of Laporte is whether they have enough money to close the deal.
The Spanish giants, now managed by former Guardiola player Xavi, are in the midst of a financial crisis.
As a result, much of Barca's transfer activity is expected to be limited to signing players out of contract - with the club currently in contact with the moves of Lionel Messi, Ilkay Gundogan and Roberto Firmino. However, Laporte has a contract at the Etihad until 2025, so the Catalan team will have to pay a fee to get his services. Unless, of course, Guardiola pleases his old club and lends it to him.
The Spain defender is said to be willing to take a pay cut to make the move, so we could see Man City replace Laporte with Min-jae this summer.
