Being a football coach is a stressful job, but it can also be extremely lucrative for bosses in Europe's top leagues.

While football clubs invest most of their money in new players, they are also willing to spend a lot of money to attract or retain world-class managers.

Using figures from French outlet L'Equipe, we looked at the 10 highest paid managers in world football in 2023.

Unsurprisingly, the Premier League bosses occupy two of the top three spots, but Manchester United's Erik ten Hag and Arsenal's Mikel Arteta are not in the top 10.

ten. Niko Kovac – £3,522,480 per year

After sacking Mark van Bommel and Florian Kohfeldt for the 2021/22 season, Wolfsburg has appointed Kovac as the club's new head coach ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The 51-year-old has a good track record in Germany, having helped Eintracht Frankfurt win the 2017/18 DFB-Pokal before leading Bayern Munich to a Bundesliga double and the DFB Cup 2018/19.

The 2022/23 season has had a rough start and Wolfsburg have only picked up two points from their opening five games, but they have turned the tide and are now fighting for a place in the European qualifiers.

9. Xabi Alonso - £4,397,832/year

Alonso has worked under legendary coaches throughout his playing career and began his own coaching career in Real Madrid's youth system before leading Real's B team. Sociedad in 2019. He then took his first senior management job in October 2022, taking over the Bayer Leverkusen team that are 17th in the Bundesliga after eight games.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder has seen a significant change at BayArena and Leverkusen is currently sixth in the Bundesliga.

Alonso's men have also reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they will face team Roma due to…

8. Jose Mourinho - £8,120,712/year

Mourinho arrives in Rome in 2021 with a serious track record, having won eight national championships, two Champions Leagues, two Europa Leagues and 13 domestic titles during his coaching career.

However, many critics say the 60-year-old is past his prime after poor matches at Manchester United and Tottenham. He quelled those doubts by winning the Europa Conference League in his first season and has since led Roma to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

According to reports in France, Paris Saint-Germain have an eye on Mourinho and want him to replace Christophe Galtier on the bench.

7. Simone Inzaghi – £8,753,484/year

Inzaghi moved from Lazio to Inter Milan in the summer of 2021 and was assigned to replace Antonio Conte, who had just helped the club win its first Serie A championship in 11 years.

The 47-year-old won the Coppa Italia in his first season in charge and has now led Inter to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they will face city rivals AC Milan. Despite impressive displays in Europe, Inter have struggled to find steady form in Serie A 2022/23 and Inzaghi is in danger of losing his job this summer.

6. Carlo Ancelotti – £9.597,204/year

While Ancelotti remains in the top six, he is said to have taken a pay cut to leave Everton and return to Real Madrid in 2021.

The 63-year-old leader has exceeded all expectations at Madrid when he completed the Champions League and La Liga double in the 2021/22 season.

Madrid's success made him the first coach to win championships in Europe's top five leagues - England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France.
