Erling Haaland breaks record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season

Erling Haaland has set a new record for the most goals scored in a 38-game Premier League season after netting his 33rd goal in Manchester City's win over Arsenal. The Norwegian striker has been in sensational form throughout his debut season in England, chasing the goalscoring record previously held by Liverpool's Mohamed Salah. Salah had set the record of 32 goals in the 2017-18 season, which Haaland has now surpassed.

However, Haaland is not the highest single-season goalscorer in the league's history. Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer both scored 34 goals in 1993-94 and 1994-95, respectively. But they achieved this record when the Premier League season was four games longer, with 22 top-flight clubs.

Haaland has an unfair disadvantage when it comes to achieving the goalscoring record, given the fewer number of games he has to do it in. But he remains on track to surpass both Cole and Shearer, with six top-flight matches remaining for Manchester City.

The 22-year-old has been prolific in all aspects for Pep Guardiola's side, scoring a total of 49 goals in all competitions this season. In addition to his impressive tally in the Premier League, Haaland also has 12 goals in eight Champions League appearances, three goals in three FA Cup games, and one goal in two Carabao Cup outings. He even scored five goals in City's 7-0 demolition of RB Leipzig earlier in their Champions League campaign, becoming just the second player in the competition's history after Lionel Messi to achieve the feat.

Haaland joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for £51 million in the summer transfer window and immediately hit the ground running. He scored a brace on his Premier League debut in City's 2-0 win over West Ham and has gone on to record four hat-tricks during City's wins against Crystal Palace, Wolves, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester United. In addition to his efficiency in front of goal, Haaland has also contributed six assists to his City teammates this season.

In summary, Haaland has set a new record for the most goals scored in a 38-game Premier League season, surpassing Salah's previous record of 32 goals. Although he is not the highest single-season goalscorer in the league's history, Haaland remains on track to surpass Cole and Shearer's record. He has been prolific in all aspects for Manchester City, scoring a total of 49 goals in all competitions this season, and has also contributed six assists to his teammates.
