Phil Foden's tweets on Ben White reveal genuine feelings during tense Arsenal clash
Arsenal defender Ben White and Manchester City striker Phil Foden - who are international team-mates - clashed during their game at the Etihad on Wednesday.
Ben White and Phil Foden were involved in some unpleasant scenes following Manchester City's win against Arsenal on Wednesday.
Pep Guardiola's side won 4-1 at the Etihad to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to two points with two games remaining. City are now expected to defend their title and extend their 11-game domestic winning streak.
As the two teams shook hands at the end of the game, White grabbed Foden by the scruff of the neck before the City star pulled him away. It's unclear what sparked the argument, but Foden's earlier comments about White imply he has complete regard for his countryman.
When England reached the Euro 2020 final in the summer of 2021, White and Foden became teammates. White was a reserve in the 26-man team at the time, having replaced the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, whereas Foden was a star.
ITV questioned Foden during the tournament which England star had surprised him the most in training. "You know, I haven't seen a lot of Ben, and he came in and has been brilliant in training, so I'd say Ben White," he answered.
After the tournament, White moved to Arsenal from Brighton in a £50 million deal. Bukayo Saka was in agreement with Foden. "I haven't seen him [White] a lot this season, but coming here and training with him," he continued.
On Wednesday, White and Foden clashed as the Arsenal defender shook hands with City duo Rodri and Julian Alvarez. White also attempted to shake Foden's hand, but the City forward walked away, possibly ignorant of White.
White then came to a halt in front of Foden. Things were heated at that point, with White seizing his England colleague. Before numerous players from each team got involved in the brawl, Foden wriggled free of White's hands and pushed him away.
The anxious atmosphere was appropriate given that City had just won the season's biggest game. Arsenal now needs City to lose at least four points if they are to win their first Premier League title in 19 years and end the season with a trophy.
