OFFICIAL: Marco Reus has extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2024
In the final spurt of the season, Borussia Dortmund and its captain are sending an important signal: Dortmund-born Marco Reus (33), who first joined BVB's youth team as a six-year-old in the mid-1990s, has extended his expiring contract by another year until the end of the 2023/24 season. He will start his twelfth season as a professional in the Black and Yellow jersey this summer, and in view of the current 161 competitive goals, he is still 16 short of club legend Adi Preißler's record.
Hans-Joachim Watzke, chairman of the BVB board, paid tribute to Reus as a "deserving player of our club", whom he personally wished "the greatest possible success in the late phase of his career". "Marco has had a lot of bad luck with injuries, but he is a Borussia through and through and, as captain of our team, pursues exactly the same goals as all of us: He is and remains as ambitious as possible to lead our BVB to really big goals."
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl commented on the new contract: "I am very happy that Marco will continue his special story at BVB for another year with this signature. At no time did we allow ourselves to be distracted by daily discussions and always conducted our joint discussions positively, trustingly and purposefully. Marco has an enormous significance for this club as a player and role model – with our fans on the 'Süd', in this city, but also beyond the borders of Dortmund and BVB fans all over the world. As a long-time BVB professional and original Dortmund player, he will not only continue to play an active role in celebrating successes on the pitch, but will also use all his experience to drive the development of the young generation within our squad."
Commenting on his contract extension, Marco Reus said: "At the moment, we as a team, just like all our fans, have a big goal in mind, on which everyone is focused: We want to become German champions, and we need every single Borussia player to do that. But even beyond that, I still have a great desire to give my best for the club, where I have already spent more than half my life. There is still nothing better for me than scoring goals in front of the best fans in the world and in the most beautiful stadium in the world and celebrating victories together. That's why I'm delighted to have extended my contract for another year, because I've always said that I wouldn't want to play for any other club in my career mo re than BVB.
