With Borussia Dortmund, Marco Reus is on the verge of winning his first Bundesliga championship, and he'll be back for more the following year.
On Thursday, Marco Reus agreed to a one-year extension with Borussia Dortmund as the captain pursued Bundesliga supremacy.
The 33-year-old Dortmund stalwart has committed to staying on until the conclusion of the 2023–24 season, and he wants to start the following season with a championship to defend.
He'll be in his 12th and possibly final season with Dortmund's first team.
Dortmund-born Prior to spending six seasons away at Rot Weiss Ahlen and Borussia Monchengladbach, Reus rose through the ranks of the team; however, since his return to BVB in 2012, he has been a key player.
Reus is 16 goals short of Adi Preissler's record of 177 goals for the club, which may be a target, as Dortmund pointed out when they announced his deal.
"As a team, we - just like all of our fans - have a big goal on our minds right now that we are fully focused on: we want to become the German champions; to do that, we'll need every single Borusse," Reus wrote in a message to supporters.
Beyond that, though, I still genuinely want to give my all to the team I've spent more than half my life with. For me, there is still nothing better than scoring goals in front of the greatest supporters possible, in the most stunning stadium possible, and sharing in our triumphs.
I've always maintained there's no other club I'd like to play for over BVB in my career, so I'm glad I've extended my contract by another year.
With five rounds of games remaining, Dortmund leads Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga by one point.
Reus has experienced some bad luck with injuries during his career, but never more so than in 2014, when he was forced to sit out of Germany's successful World Cup campaign after suffering an ankle injury just days before the competition.
Reus was characterized as "supremely ambitious to lead our BVB to its greatest objectives" by Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, while sports director Sebastian Kehl was happy to see the transfer through to completion.
