WHAT OCCURED? It's the most talked-about move of the upcoming summer window. With only a few months left on Messi's contract at Paris Saint-Germain and the capital club seemingly willing to let him leave, a return to his boyhood club appears to be on the cards. While Messi may have few other elite-level European clubs fighting for his signing, the way back to Barcelona is not fully apparent, considering the club's precarious financial status.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Following reports that La Liga president Javier Tebas was awaiting a "feasibility plan" to bring Messi back, Spanish media AS has disclosed how this financing could be obtained. There are plans in the works to turn the old offices of the legendary youth academy, La Masia, which is located close to Camp Nou, into a museum devoted to their Argentine hero. Talks with Telefónica, the Spanish telecoms operator, are said to have already commenced.
ADDITIONALLY, the idea is that the "interactive and immersive center" will draw thousands of tourists and fans, providing a constant income to fund the signing of the PSG star. If these numbers fall within Tebas' recently specified restrictions, the La Liga president will almost certainly sanction the transfer given the clear commercial money - specifically in TV rights - that the Argentina star offers to the league.
WHAT COMES NEXT? Barcelona has been vocal about wanting their star player back, most notably during a dinner with current Blaugrana players. However, the economic aspect of Messi's return remains important, and a potential renewal with PSG is not fully ruled out at this point.
