President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo through his office at the presidency has issued a statement to Qatari based media network Al Jazeera requesting for a retraction and apology, for what they describe as a malicious attempt to drag the name of the highest office into the gutters .
This comes after Al Jazeera aired a documentary which exposed how top government officials earn huge sums of money through dubious and unmerited means . One business mogul Mr. Alistair Mathias who actually is the owner of Guldrest Resources Ltd in Ghana in the documentary was the middle man for most unmerited contracts in which the expenditure was inflated to at least 10% . This 10% served as a profit for these top officials and these deals mostly involved gold dealings .
The documentary allegedly claims the president of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo actually benefitted from one of the deals as he acted as the lawyer for Mr Alistair Mathias and his firm . The office of the president claims these allegations are baseless and holds no substance of truth and sees this as a avenue to bring the office of the president and the government of Ghana into disrepute .
In a letter dated 11th April , 2023 , responding to Al Jazeera’s letter dated 2nd April 2023 which was received on 6th April , 2023 containing vague and defamatory allegations, the leading counsel to the President, Kow Abaka Essuman acting on the orders of the president ,informed Al Jazeera that the president had not been in active private practice since the year 2000 . The president has not provided any form of legal service to Mr. Alistair Mathias or his company Guldrest Resources.
Al Jazeera have failed to provide concrete evidence to back their claims against the President of Ghana and the government of Ghana. Additionally at the end of the documentary there was a text that contradicted the content of the documentary . The subject of the documentary , Mr Alistair Mathias has also denied what he said in the documentary to investigative journalist of Al Jazeera.
The office of the presidency in the said letter , sees certain parts of the documentary as malicious, defamatory and a calculated attempt to tarnish the good image of the President and the government of Ghana.
It is therefore demanding Al Jazeera to withdraw the documentary as soon as possible , retract and apologise to the President and the government of Ghana for airing such an unprofessional and defamatory content .
Failure on the part of the Qatari based media network will see the Government of Ghana take legal actions within seven (7) days .
Below is the press statement released by the secretary at the presidency Nana Bediatuo Asante .
