Son Heung-min said that Tottenham's fightback against Manchester United on Thursday night was motivated by "anger" after the team fell behind 2-0 just days after being destroyed 6-1 at Newcastle United.
After Spurs lost 5-0 at St. James' Park in just 21 minutes, Cristian Stellini's four-game stint as interim manager came to an end. Ryan Mason was asked to take over the team until the end of the season in an effort to turn things around.
Mason watched dejectedly as Spurs fell behind United 2-0 on goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. However, a far superior second half performance allowed Spurs to tie the game at 2-2 on goals from Pedro Porro and Son.
The latter has had a bad season by his high standards; the South Korean won the Golden Boot in 2021–2022, scoring 23 goals, but has scored 14 fewer goals this time around. However, he teamed up with an old friend, Harry Kane, to undermine United's attempt to finish in the top three.
Son said after the game that frustration from going behind at halftime, less than a week after the Newcastle thumping, was the catalyst for turning things around. Spurs' tenacity was clear in the second 45 minutes.
That was the dressing room speech, and we wanted to give everything, Son said. "We were unable to let the game end. We were quite upset about it since we didn't deserve to be down 2-0 at the break.
We didn't want to repeat the bad behavior of the previous week. We wanted to offer positive vibes today because we are incredibly sorry for the performance and outcome.
"We really valued the support of [the fans], and they were fighting alongside us."
Spurs' chances of making the Champions League are mathematically still viable, even though they are dangling by a thread. To reach 68 points, Spurs will need Son's assistance in winning their final five games; in addition, they must hope that United wins just seven of their final seven games.
