Why Pep Guardiola is greatest manager ever, better than Ferguson and Mourinho
Pep Guardiola is widely considered to be the greatest football manager of all time. This opinion was shared by Thierry Henry, who spoke at length about Guardiola's qualities when he was appointed as Manchester City's manager in 2016. Guardiola's success at Barcelona and Bayern Munich had already confirmed his ability, but even Henry undersold his obsessive attention to detail, tactical awareness, passion, and ability to get the best out of every player he coached. Since becoming the youngest coach to win the Champions League in his first season with Barcelona, Guardiola has won an incredible 30 major trophies across Spain, Germany, and England. He has worked with some of the greatest players in football history, including Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, Henry, Lewandowski, Neuer, Aguero, De Bruyne, and Haaland.
Despite not having won as many league titles as Sir Alex Ferguson or as many European Cups as Carlo Ancelotti, Guardiola's sheer weight of success and brilliance of his football make him stand out from the crowd. His teams don't just beat opponents; they overwhelm them. City's recent victory over Arsenal saw them score their 995th goal of Pep's reign, and there's every chance they will reach 1,000 at Fulham on Sunday. Even when faced with tough opposition, City seems to have discovered some cheat code that allows them to cope with every question opponents ask of them.
City has recently been hit with over 100 charges of financial impropriety by the Premier League, but Guardiola has maintained their innocence. Despite this, some observers are reluctant to give City credit for their brilliance on the pitch, which may be due to the permanent whiff of backstage dodginess that surrounds them. Nevertheless, Guardiola has raised the bar so high that it will take something remarkable to catch him.
