The winger will not represent his country at the World Under-20 Championship, although boss Javier Mascherano has urged him to do so.

Garnacho has struggled with injury recently and has not played for United since mid-March.

However, The Mirror reports that he is keen to take part in the tournament starting in Argentina from May 20.

Ten Hag wanted to keep the 18-year-old at United for the final games of the season, but Mascherano begged him to let him go. The former Liverpool and West Ham star compared that situation to Lionel Messi in 2008 for the Beijing Olympics.

Messi was initially not allowed to join the Argentina squad for the tournament, but Barcelona eventually allowed him to go to China.

He scored two goals en route to a gold medal, before lifting the La Liga and Champions League titles with his club in the following months.

Mascherano is said to have told Ten Hag that such an experience has helped make Messi the superstar he is today.

However, that wasn't enough to change the Dutchman's mind as he wanted to keep Garnacho over the past few weeks. Garnacho commits to long-term future with MU

The youngster has had an impressive season so far, scoring four goals and assisting five more in all competitions.

Garnacho's efforts have paid off with a new contract at United until 2028.

He is yet to play for the Argentina national team, but that will most likely change over the next few seasons.
