Pep Guardiola targets Sir Alex Ferguson's many Premier League records
Pep Guardiola aims to break many of the records held by Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester City strives to make history in the 2022/23 season.
Considered by many to be the greatest manager in football history, the former Manchester United manager set the standard for future generations during his trophy-laden 27 years at Old Trafford.
Ferguson, who has just entered the Premier League Hall of Fame alongside arch-rival Arsene Wenger, has won the Premier League 13 times with the Red Devils.
The 81-year-old's extraordinary feat has stood the test of time and unless Guardiola plans to stay at the Etihad Stadium for another decade, his record is intact.
But the Spaniard, who has won four Premier League titles, is still able to achieve some remarkable milestones that only Ferguson has been able to achieve before him. After restoring control in the title race following the midweek 4-1 destruction of Arsenal in the Premier League, the former Barcelona manager could lead City to a third consecutive title.
As you can imagine, Ferguson is the only manager in Premier League history to win the title for three consecutive seasons. What you may not know, however, is that the Scottish powerhouse did it twice.
He led Man Utd to three consecutive Premier League titles for the first time from 1999 to 2001, an impressive string of achievements including the unprecedented treble of the famous 1998/99 campaign.
With City still fighting on three different fronts, Guardiola could repeat Ferguson's historic feat unless the Red Devils derail his plans in the FA Cup final. Of course, Cityzens could still lose to Arsenal in the Premier League title race, but that seems unlikely given the teams' current form and Man City's outstanding domestic record.
Record-breaking Champions League champions, Real Madrid may also find it difficult to face British heavyweights to repeat last season's semi-final.
However, after almost missing out on European glory in 2020/21 and confusingly withdrawing in the last four rounds of last season, Guardiola is intent on correcting his mistakes this season.
And even if he doesn't win the Premier League, he will still be the second most successful manager in the league's history, having surpassed Wenger and Jose Mourinho last season.
But when things stabilize, winning another Premier League title seems almost certain for the Spaniard.
