Despite scoring twice in a game last week, the England international was named among the substitutes.

Callum Wilson, who came on as a substitute, scored twice as Newcastle rallied to defeat Southampton 3-1 and advance their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

The England striker produced the ideal response following his halftime introduction, canceling out Stuart Armstrong's first-half opener and then helping himself to a second after Theo Walcott's own goal had given the Magpies the lead. Despite being left out of Eddie Howe's starting lineup on Thursday evening, the striker scored twice at Everton.

Wilson's 14th and 15th goals of the year helped Newcastle defeat the Saints for the fourth time this season and earn their eighth victory in nine Premier League games, keeping them ahead of Manchester United in the race for the top four.

The visitors are still in serious peril as time is running out on their remaining games despite having made more than a mess of the game before the interval.

This time, Southampton had the first shot on goal within the first 60 seconds when goalkeeper Nick Pope had to dive well to stop Kyle Walker-Peters' firm drive. Howe's team had exploded out of the gates a week earlier to race into a 5-0 lead over Tottenham inside 21 crazy minutes.

However, after latching onto Jacob Murphy's through ball in the seventh minute, Anthony Gordon fired a shot into the side netting, and after Pope turned aside Armstrong's shot from a tight angle, Bruno Guimaraes saw his volley miss after Alexander Isak had flicked on his cross.

The combination of James Ward-Prowse, Walker-Peters, and Armstrong down the left was fruitful, and Southampton continued to have long stretches of possession despite this. With Sean Longstaff's foraging and drive missing from the Magpies' engine room, Southampton was still very much in the game.

Isak passed the ball inside to Gordon, who pulled defender Lyanco and beat advancing keeper Alex McCarthy, but his shot clipped the outside of a post and the home team should have been ahead after 19 minutes.
