Former President John Mahama has to take the floor of the House of Representatives to defend his assertions on the cocoa industry.

According to John Mahama, the government's poor handling of the sector is the reason why the nation's cocoa industry is about to collapse.

At the beginning of his two-day campaign tour of the Western North Region, Mr. Mahama spoke to party supporters and branch executives. He claimed that the failure of the government to annually adjust the producer price of cocoa resulted in a payment delay for farmers for their beans, which, combined with other factors, led to the sector's demise.

Ghana's cocoa industry has not failed, contrary to assertions made by the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD). It characterized such claims as false and harmful to the cocoa industry, the backbone of Ghana's economy.

In response to this occurrence, COCOBOD was accused of spreading incorrect information by Ranking Member of Parliament for Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, Eric Opoku.

"Ghana COCOBOD must understand that they cannot hide behind lies to conceal the destruction they have inflicted on the cocoa industry, the countless ships they have let loose on Ghanaian cocoa farmers, and the egregious incompetence, mismanagement, recklessness, and insensitivity shown thus far."

The minority claims that the situation faced by COCOBOD has gotten worse under the administration of President Akufo-Addo.

"In 2017, the NDC handed over a flourishing and wealthy cocoa business with reserves in the cocoa stabilization fund, farmers' welfare fund, depreciation fund, farmers' housing fund, and other accounts, including GH29 million set aside for the anticipated rollout of the cocoa farmers pension system.

from GH800 in 2017/18 to 2022/23.

It should be mentioned that the 2014-15 season under John Mahama had the largest increase in producer price in the previous 20 years (from GH212 to GH345—62.7%).
