Dr. John Kusimi, a member of the University of Ghana Mining Research Group, has voiced his amazement at the present administrative government's lack of success in the battle against illicit mining.
He said that since President Akufo-Addo launched Operation Vanguard to combat the canker, he had expected the government to vigorously examine the operation's results and bring criminal charges against perpetrators.
In an interview with Newsfile on April 29, Dr. Kumi said, "I'm astonished that the administration or the president hasn't done more about it [the battle against galamsey] for two years now.
He was of the opinion that not enough was being done to help the fight be effective, despite the fact that he accepted that the government had built organizations to combat galamsey.
"You see, this body, the ministerial committee, was established by the government and the president to look into and stop this issue, this canker that is devouring everything. In my opinion, the President should have had the opportunity to look into the report's accuracy, if any, and determine what can be done about it when it was provided to him.
He also condemned the presidency's reaction, which labeled the report on Galamsey by Prof. Frimpong Boateng as "mere hearsay."
Dr. Kusimi clarified that the president didn't need to wait for the study to be released in order to respond to it; it had plenty of time to look into the report's veracity.
Therefore, he emphasized the need for action in response to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng's report.
The public was recently made aware of a shocking study that was put together by Prof. Frimpong Boateng, a former environment minister who also served as the IMCIM's chairman.
Prof. Boateng identified a number of top government figures who were actively participating in illicit mining in the 2021 report sent to the president.
The former minister also said that the Galamsey threat reached Jubilee House, which is where the president resides.
The government officials listed in the study, nevertheless, have also stepped out to deny the allegations made against them.
