Tunisia's team Esperance Sportive de Tunis welcomed JS Kabylie of Algeria in the second leg of the round of 16 and won 2-1 on aggregate.

However, it was not the action on the pitch that caused a stir on social media, but a fire that was started just meters away with a fan even using a chainsaw.

In a clip shared online by BBC Africa's Tunisian journalist Souhail Khmira, the scenes of violence that broke out after the first half were described as peaceful at the home ground of defending champions Tunisia.

Video shows a small fire next to a security fence preventing fans from entering the field, while another spectator aggressively shakes the barricades.

With debris mounting underfoot, the chainsaw operator stepped back to get the tool up and running as two others nearly set themselves alight as they successfully got the flames to spread.

Despite thick black smoke bellowing into the air, the game miraculously went on as planned with the fire behind the running track at the Hammadi Agrebi Stadium in Rades.

Further images showed a man with his shirt around only his neck holding the chainsaw in the air, as well as it being proudly snapped outside the 60,000 seater stadium.

It was later reported that the man in question was detained and taken into police custody, with investigations continuing.

With another CAF Champions League quarter-final between Raja AC and Al Ahly in Casablanca also being marred by fan unrest, the governing body were forced to release a statement. Esperance de Tunis will face Al Ahly in the last four matches.

CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba said:

"The scenes in Tunis and Casablanca were unacceptable and we cannot tolerate this in football.

"We strongly condemn the undisciplined actions of some of our supporters. The CAF will refer this matter to our judiciary for further investigation."
