THE FACTS UNDERLYING TOTTENHAM'S SLUGGISH GAME-OPENING PERFORMANCES

In recent years, Spurs have allowed a ton of early goals.

After Sunday's 4-3 loss at Anfield, Harry Kane became frustrated with Tottenham's propensity for a slow game-start.

Within the first 15 minutes, Liverpool jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Spurs battled back to tie the score at 3-3 before losing in injury time.

We need to start understanding key situations and huge games better, Kane said. "Dreadful start in the first 20 minutes, not the first time it's happened this season."

The PA news agency identifies a few crucial statistics that contribute to Tottenham's sluggish starts here.

Await results.

The lowest percentage of any team in the top tier, only one-third of Tottenham's 63 Premier League goals this season have been scored in the first half.

Spurs would be ninth in the league if games stopped after 45 minutes, with 10 victories out of 34 and a goal difference of -9 (21 goals scored compared to 30 conceded).

Only Manchester City and Arsenal have a better second-half record than them, with 17 victories and a goal differential of +15 (42 goals for, 27 against).

Under the previous manager Antonio Conte, Tottenham were even more cautious in cup games.

Spurs failed to score before halftime in 11 of their 12 matches in the Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup, with the exception of three goals in the first 36 minutes at home against Eintracht Frankfurt.

a mountain to scale

Tottenham has routinely trailed in games, giving up the opening goal in 18 of their 34 games in the Premier League.

The most goals have been conceded by them in the opening quarter of games (20), nine of which have come in the last three games against top-four opponents Newcastle, Manchester United, and Liverpool.

Spurs have since allowed early goals by United's Jadon Sancho and Liverpool's Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz, and Mohamed Salah after allowing five in the first 21 minutes at St James' Park, the second-worst start to a game in Premier League history (behind Watford's five conceded in 18 minutes against Manchester City in 2019).
