A year ago

A Nigerian Doctor identified on the micro-blogging platform Twitter as @the_beardedsina made a thread about some of the health risks of ladies. According to the doctor, he had a conversation with some ladies and they confirmed to him that, they wash and reuse their sanitary pads since they can't afford new ones due to the high price. Going forward he revealed that, the prices of sanitary pads should be subsidized or made free. His assertions generated a lot of conversations with users sharing their various opinions. The conversation of menstrual pads being very expensive has been ongoing for years and nothing has been done about them, leaving young girls who can't afford them to opt for cheaper options which can later result in some health issues.

According to one user,  he took it upon himself to give out free pads to young girls who can't afford them, however, he was later accused of wanting to use the blood of the young ladies for rituals hence he stopped sending out the free pads.

A few of the comments shared by users are highlighted below;

@omoalhajaabiola •

“I started giving free menstrual pads in 2019 but

had to stop it last year when parents said we are

trying to use their kids for rituals”.

@Shawt madam •

“I don't stress myself anymore, I got a menstrual cup last year and it's been safe.. the only thing you need is a pant liner in case of leakage when full or

not placing well”.

@KolawoleFalodun •

“It's crazy. Is there a reason menstrual cups are not

commonly used in Nigeria? I've read a lot of good

reviews about it”.

@pami_lerin

“Virony that used to be 700 when it came out, I got it for 1,500 the last time. It's ridiculous how the prices of pads are that expensive. They are supposed to be made affordable for girls and women so they don't have to use pieces of clothes. It's just so ridiculous fr”.

@nzewi.

“Over expensive now Doctor. The painful one is that even after buying it very expensive the pad is not per standard. The Lady Care pad they are producing now is rubbish. The pad tears open and the cotton wool inside is breaking. Before you know it you are stained”.

@LabCoa..•

“The expense is just one of the issues, the quality is

the problem with something that has gotten that

expensive, it doesn't serve its purpose anymore”.
