Chelsea could let trio leave this summer to reduce wage bill
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Chelsea may be looking to reduce their wage bill by offloading three players - Mason Mount, Edouard Mendy, and Mateo Kovacic. All three players have been linked with moves away from Stamford Bridge in recent times.
Mount, a midfielder, has reportedly attracted interest from Bayern Munich and Liverpool, with Sport 1 claiming that Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel is keen on a reunion with Kovacic. Mendy, a goalkeeper, was reportedly told by Chelsea in March that he can leave the club in the summer.
Despite being only 24 years old, it is possible that Mount is keen on leaving the club. This could impact the morale of the dressing room if other players know that one of their teammates wants out.
If Chelsea do decide to let these players go, it could be a major reshuffle for the club. With the summer transfer window looming, it will be an important time for new manager Mauricio Pochettino, should he be confirmed for the role. The club will need to bring in new players to replace any outgoing stars.
One area that Chelsea will need to strengthen is their goal scoring ability. No player has scored double figures in goals for the team this season, highlighting the need for a natural striker to be brought in. Additionally, a central midfielder and goalkeeper are also positions that the club may look to add quality options to.
Despite the potential for major changes, there is one player who Chelsea may be able to rely on for goal scoring - Christopher Nkunku. The RB Leipzig midfielder is expected to complete a move to Chelsea over the summer for a fee close to 50 million. Although he has had injury problems this season, he has still managed to score 18 goals from 30 games, with his 13th in the league coming just over the weekend.
If Nkunku can continue his good form and Chelsea can successfully bring in new players to strengthen their squad, they could be in a strong position for the upcoming season. However, the potential departures of Mount, Mendy, and Kovacic could make for a challenging summer for the club. Only time will tell what the future holds for Chelsea and their players.
