Kyle Walker admits he didn't expect Erling Haaland to have the impact of the 50 goals he has had since joining City last summer.
Teammate Kyle Walker thinks Erling Haaland can continue to break records for Manchester City but needs to show consistency over several seasons.
Haaland scored his 50th goal of the season in all competitions with a penalty against Fulham on Sunday, equaling the Premier League's record 34 goals in a single season in the process. With nine games left - 10 if City reach the Champions League final - he has the chance to set a record that could take years to break.
However, Walker believes Haaland will continue to break records for City if his debut campaign goes ahead, but he must continue what he has been doing for the next few seasons. Comparing Haaland to England and former Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane, Walker noted that the Norwegian has raised the bar for what to expect from a No. 9. And Walker also admits he didn't expect Haaland to be as prolific. So since joining Man City.
Walker says:
“I could see [his quality] when we faced him in the Champions League, but do I feel he can run out and score goals like him – of course not. .
"Coming to a new league, a new team is always difficult. It shows the level of the player, the maturity of the young man at the age of 22. Long can it continue. It's amazing what he did.
"I've had the honor of playing with him and Harry Kane now, who for me are the best No.9s. The goals they both scored were huge. Now Erling has brought it up. a new level - he's setting the standard, he's just young and he needs to keep performing season after season to hopefully continue to break more records and stay on top form ."
Walker also detailed City's dressing room determination against Fulham following last week's big win over Arsenal, urging the team to continue to maintain high standards and take nothing for granted this year. Last week of the season. "We said in the dressing room after the hard game against Arsenal that we had to come here - no disrespect to Fulham - and win," Walker said.
"I've been very fortunate to have played for some great teams at Manchester City. The form has come at a really good time, but we have to make sure we keep going. Now we are. It's important that we rest, recover, eat well, sleep well and continue to West Ham. "I think that's exactly the quality of the players and the coach we have. Everyone in this dressing room is a winner - we've proven it season after season. Now Now is the big time This is when the big players come into the game on the big occasions and we get the wins we need to reach our end goal.
"We think about each game at a time. There is a lot of football to play. [The third] is possible and we are still in contention, but all I want to focus on right now is the game against West Ham. We are in good form right now and we have to keep going."
