As the Magpies battled to find the opening, the 22-year-old earlier struck the post.

Despite yet another early withdrawal against Southampton, Eddie Howe is confident Anthony Gordon will be a top player for Champions League-chasing Newcastle.

The 3-1 comeback victory over the Saints on Sunday, which strengthened their hold on third place, marked the £45 million January signing's third start for the team. Callum Wilson replaced him at halftime.

Although Howe was pleased with Gordon's contribution since joining from Everton and is expecting much, much more from him in the future, the 22-year-old had earlier missed two good scoring opportunities, including clipping the post with a shot in the 19th minute after beating goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

We've seen hints of amazing potential, he remarked. I've said it before, but I have no doubts that he will be a top player for us.

"These things sometimes take a little longer for everyone else to see, but I have no doubts," the speaker said.

In addition, Gordon was taken off after 56 minutes in the 3-0 loss at Aston Villa and 62 minutes into his full debut against Manchester City. This happened a week after Gordon reacted violently after being taken off after being introduced from the bench against Brentford.

Howe claimed that the player's response in this particular instance was exactly what he would have anticipated.

If there can be a very good reaction to being taken off, he said: "His reaction to being taken off was very good.

He was doubtless really disappointed on the inside, but he pretended not to be. There were no overt indications of a hostile response to that, which you need in that circumstance.

"I needed to remove someone in order to introduce Callum. Actually, it was a process of making that choice. In the first half, Anthony played well in my opinion. He was the catalyst for some of our best moments, so it wasn't really a criticism of what he had provided the group.
