Last week, Sport claimed Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola had 'vetoed' Joo Cancelo's transfer to Barcelona during the winter market.
The right-back joined Bayern Munich on loan in the same transfer window, and they have the option to let him stay permanently. Even so, the La Liga club continue to see the 28-year-old as a summer target.
That's according to a 'confidential' report from Sport, which claims the Manchester City-owned player is Barca's 'preferred' target, alongside Thomas Meunier.
Barca is facing economic difficulties and Xavi Hernndez believes the meager money raised should be used to strengthen other positions. The option of signing a new right-back was ruled out two weeks ago but the most recent setbacks [possibly due to Sergi Roberto's injury] have given them a second thought.
It is reported that the Catalan club will try to sign an experienced right-back and their aim is to get the player on loan or on a cheap deal. As a result, the option to sign Juan Foyth from Villarreal has been ruled out.
Cancelo is said to be the 'closest option' for Barcelona as he 'wants to go to' Camp Nou. He seems willing to take a pay cut if Manchester City are willing to accept a loan. This can only happen if Bayern decides not to exercise the buy option.
Guardiola previously blocked the Portugal international's move to Barcelona in January and it is likely he will do it again this summer.
With Cancelo keen to join Barca, a deal could be done in the near term, if the player and the Spanish giants convince the Manchester City manager.
