Referee Paul Tierney told he could face Liverpool action due to "well known problems"

Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has questioned whether Premier League referee Paul Tierney should be allowed to officiate Liverpool games after another incident involving Tierney and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. During Liverpool's 4-3 win against Tottenham on Sunday, Tierney showed Klopp a yellow card for vigorously celebrating in front of fourth official John Brooks when Diogo Jota scored the winner in the 94th minute. Klopp later claimed that what Tierney said to him when booking him was "not okay," and the FA has opened an investigation into the incident. However, the PGMOL has already said that Tierney acted professionally.

Aldridge, in his column for the Liverpool Echo, criticized Tierney's performance during the match and suggested that there have been problems with the referee in the past. He questioned whether Liverpool should make a complaint and whether Tierney should be barred from officiating their games. Aldridge also wondered whether there was an issue causing Klopp's emotional reaction to the situation.

Klopp, in an interview with Sky Sports after the match, expressed frustration with Tierney's decisions and suggested that the referee had something against Liverpool. Klopp's touchline behavior has been a point of controversy in the past, with some critics claiming that he goes too far in his celebrations and protests.

The incident with Tierney is just the latest in a series of flashpoints involving Klopp and referees, and it remains to be seen what action, if any, will be taken by Liverpool or the FA. In the meantime, the Reds will be focused on their upcoming matches, including a Premier League clash with Fulham on Wednesday and a showdown with Brentford on Saturday.

Klopp was emotional after the win over Spurs, stating in an interview with Sky Sports that "We have our history with Tierney, I really don't know what he has against us. He has said there [are] no problems but that cannot be true. How he looks at me, I don't understand it."

This is not the first time that Klopp has had issues with Tierney. In January 2020, Klopp criticised Tierney's decision to award a penalty to Manchester United in a 2-0 defeat at Anfield. In October 2020, Klopp was fined £8,000 for misconduct after confronting Tierney at half-time during Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion.
