World Facility Management Day for this year has officially begun in Accra with the slogan "Facility management, making a real difference in Ghana."

The occasion is annually honored by the international facilities management community.

On May 10, 2023, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi will celebrate the day.

The project was introduced by the International Facility Management Association, Ghana (IFMA-Ghana) last Friday in Accra, where they urged the government and other institutions to hire facility managers to take good care of the nation's structures.

Sampson Opare-Agyemang, the association's president, claimed that its members were skilled experts capable of overseeing the construction of structures from the planning stages through completion.

"The challenge today in our built environment is not just bad maintenance culture, as we always say; it is the lack of trained manpower and understanding of the value of facility managers by the government, business owners, and financial institutions," the speaker stated.

Mr. Opare-Agyemang provided information on the event and stated that it would bring together speakers from the government, academia, and industry leaders who would provide presentations on the role of stakeholders in really changing the workplace.

Additionally, they would discuss pertinent industry trends and trade experiences.

The speakers will also acknowledge the significant contributions, beneficial effects, and accomplishments the facilities management community has had on people's lives.

"World FM is a day dedicated to honoring facility managers and the whole FM industry.

The president said, "It's a time to celebrate the unsung heroes of the built environment and share well-deserved gratitude with them for maintaining our facilities' health, safety, and productivity."

Sensitisation

Prince Botwe, a facilities management expert, told the Daily Graphic that there was a need to educate the public about the field, which involved managing people, technology, and structures.

"The government just built a barracks for the police, but in five years it won't be in good standing if a facility manager isn't hired to take care of the buildings," he stated.

Mr. Botwe said that office environments and physical structures have a big influence on employees and urged businesses to trust facility managers.

"Some people have a condition known as sick building syndrome when they arrive at their place of employment but are unable to work because they do not feel comfortable.

He said that a facilities manager's job is to make sure the building is favorable to working in.
