Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has called Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez two "outstanding" coaches he has worked with during his career.

Gerrard - sacked by Aston Villa earlier this term after leading Rangers to a Scottish Premiership title in his first senior management role - has made more than 700 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 186 table after 17 seasons.

The former England international believes Houllier has "substituted" while Benitez, who continues to manage Everton, has been named "the best tactical coach" Gerrard has ever worked with.

The 42-year-old is speaking at the Be the Standard initiative, the brainchild of Paul Cheetham-Karcz, who founded the award-winning national accounting and midsize business consulting firm Sedolo.

The company represents leading brands across the UK as well as public figures in the music, sport and entertainment industries. Gerrard told Cheetham-Karcz and broadcaster Jacey Normand at the exclusive Be the Standard event:

“My great coach is Gerrard Houllier. He is the best and has changed me. He made me a first team player.

"Rafa is the best tactical coach I have ever worked with. Both leaders in different ways."

Gerrard also praised Jurgen Klopp after working with the German coach while leading the Liverpool Under-18 team. He continued:

“Jurgen has been very supportive. He knows the game. I got good advice from him. It was a good base for me and it helped me learn what it's like to be a manager."

Leaving Villa in October after 11 months at the helm, Gerrard believes setbacks can 'help' as he revealed he is determined to improve.

I said:

"I was obsessed and still obsessed with winning. But in football, perhaps like you in business, you have to be ready for the ups and downs. I had disappointments and setbacks like injuries, but it pushed me to improve even more.

"You have to be mentally ready all the time. Failures will help you in the end."

Sedulo founder Paul Cheetham-Karcz commented:

“Steven Gerrard is one of the greatest footballers in the world and even as a Stockport County fan it was exciting to hear his story up close and to hear about his focus and spirit. his god of victory.

“Business leaders in the office run extremely successful businesses and the comparison between the pressure to win and make the business successful is astounding. “The burning desire to be the best is perhaps the most striking trait, and I know everyone appreciates Steven's unique insight into how to deal with high-pressure situations that go beyond the playing field. .

"It's been an honor to have him on board and I know the business leaders in the room are grateful to hear about his incredible experiences.

"Be the Standard is a great network of people and we've had some great guests. We have big plans to grow this powerful trading network even further.
