As a result of his summer 2017 transfer from Newcastle to Manchester United, Martin Dubravka has spoken out about the online abuse he received.

After Nick Pope moved to United from Burnley, Dubravka decided to go on loan to United to take over as David de Gea's backup, where he might have had a better chance to play given their participation in the Europa League.

Erik ten Hag, however, only gave the goalkeeper two Carabao Cup games before it was revealed that the 34-year-old's loan had been shortened and he would be returning to St. James' Park in January.

Ironically, Dubravka could have played in the game after Pope was suspended but was ineligible to do so because he was cup-tied by his outings for United. Dubravka won the Carabao Cup after the Red Devils defeated the Magpies in the final in February.

The abuse that Dubravka and his family got from a small number of Newcastle supporters after moving to Old Trafford, which compelled him to remove his Twitter account, has since been uncovered, but not before Dubravka expressed his disbelief at some of it.

Some [of the messages] were very harsh, he admitted to the Mirror. They were really disrespectful to my family and me in certain cases.

’Do I deserve this after spending five years here and giving my all to the club, I wondered. That's football, though. You cannot be loved by everyone. This world isn't like that.

‘Twitter? abuse there. I did not anticipate that. However, there was also a group of fans who valued the time I had spent with them and welcomed me back with open arms.

Dubravka moved to Newcastle in January 2018 and became a major hit on Tyneside. He helped the club fight off relegation before the Saudi-backed takeover season before winning player of the year honors in 2020.
