Mark Bonner, the head coach of Cambridge, expressed his frustration after his team lost the opportunity to control their own destiny on the final day of the League One season.
Following the 1-0 loss to Burton, Bonner's team needed MK Dons and Morecambe to both lose on the final day in order to have any chance of making the drop.
We wanted to have control over it going into Sunday, but we don't, according to Bonner.
"We need to react and succeed in our current game before hoping for luck in other areas. Tonight is disappointing because we had a chance to take control of the situation.
But if we were being completely honest, six weeks ago, we would have like to be involved on the last day.
Mark Helm of Burton scored the lone goal on a deflected shot, and Bonner believed his team was responsible for their own demise.
"There are a few clubs in the league you don't want to go behind against, and they are definitely one of them," he continued. "Their goal came from our own terrible play.
"Burton had a couple of good opportunities, and will say they should have ended the game, but they didn't, so we were always in the game,"
Sam Smith felt he had equalized late on when Burton goalkeeper Jordan Amissah saved his header, but Bonner wasn't sure if the ball had passed the goal line.
"Either that is the best save I've ever seen or the ball has crossed the line," Bonner remarked.
"I'm not sure which, but everyone was jubilant as if it had (gone too far)." Although it was difficult to see on the video and replays, the shape suggested that it had.
Albion manager Dino Maamria was pleased with his team's performance as they entered the last game in a season-high 14th spot with safety already assured.
Maamria remarked, "I think that was a very strong performance throughout.
"We had some solid football games and struck the appropriate balance. We had control of the park's center. We scored one goal but had the opportunity to get two or three.
