Lionel Messi gets caught in Cristiano Ronaldo's trap, and PSG has no choice but to suspend him.
Lionel Messi was given a two-week suspension by Paris Saint-Germain for traveling to Saudi Arabia without permission when the French club had anticipated him to be in training. The Argentine superstar has no cause for complaint.
Following an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia, Paris Saint-Germain was forced to suspend Lionel Messi, adopting a strategy similar to Manchester United's treatment of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi's PSG teammates were'shocked' to learn that he had traveled to Saudi Arabia on Monday without their permission. The Argentine superstar has a contractual obligation to travel to the Gulf State as part of his duties as the country's tourist ambassador, but he didn't let anyone at PSG know about his trip.
Many of his teammates were perplexed as to why the 35-year-old wasn't present when they showed up for training on Monday. As revealed by Mirror Football, the star is anticipated to depart PSG when his contract expires at the conclusion of the current season. His contract renewal is no longer a top priority for the team.
The athlete was aware that PSG players would be required to report to practice on Monday as a result of the team's loss to Lorient in Ligue 1 the day before. If they defeated Lorient, a day off was scheduled, but only if they succeeded. Messi was aware he had to turn up on Monday after the loss. But nobody at the club, not even manager Christophe Galtier or director Luis Campos, asked him for permission to go.
On Monday, the Saudi tourism minister Ahmed Al Khateeb tweeted the following along with other images from Messi's journey: "I'm delighted to welcome #Messi and his family to Saudi Arabia so they can take advantage of our beautiful tourist attractions and real-world adventures. We invite tourists from around to take a special journey to Saudi Arabia and its friendliness. #WelcomeMessi”
Messi appeared to advertise his upcoming trip in a message he made on Sunday to his Instagram account (which was shared on the official tourist board page). Who knew Saudi Arabia had so much vegetation? I enjoy discovering its unforeseen surprises whenever I can.
The last months of Cristiano Ronaldo's time at Manchester United appear to be mirroring the trajectory of Messi's time at PSG. It was a similar situation when a star player seemed to disregard team norms and act independently of them. After United's convincing two-goal victory against Spurs in October, the 38-year-old stormed down the tunnel at Old Trafford and fled the stadium before his teammates made it back to the locker room.
When that match ended, Ronaldo's actions were widely criticized, and reports indicated that many of his club teammates were appalled by his actions. It was a turning point that hastened the deterioration of the forward's friendship with his manager Erik ten Hag.
