After Luke Shaw's remarks during Man Utd's loss to Brighton, Gary Neville has nowhere to run.
Luke Shaw had received a lot of praise from Gary Neville before giving up a late penalty that allowed Brighton to defeat Manchester United.
After applauding Luke Shaw prior to the Manchester United star's game-changing handball in the defeat to Brighton, Gary Neville has egg on his face.
At the Amex Stadium, Shaw was once again selected as one of United's center backs and had played well up until the end of regulation. But in the 96th minute, as he attempted to clear a ball in the box, the Englishman raised his arm in the air and gave away a penalty.
Before the Red Devils could clear the ball, it struck his hand. VAR Chris Kavanagh then sent referee Andre Marriner to the pitchside screen to view the incident. The Seagulls were then given a penalty by Marriner, and Alexis Mac Allister took advantage of the opportunity to score.
That ended up being the winning play, and Brighton earned all three points for an outstanding performance. Neville, a United icon, emphasized Shaw's performance prior to the incident.
"How well is Luke Shaw doing at Center Back," he tweeted. However, after Marriner had pointed to the area, the former Red Devils captain acknowledged his incorrect analysis by tweeting his original post with the words "B***** hell!" and a laughing emoji.
After the game, Shaw expressed regret for his actions, as United now trailed Newcastle by two points. However, the defender insisted that he had been shoved as the ball entered the box and blamed United's failure to score on attacking problems.
"Hands up, I admit it." I take it in stride. We made a blunder, but we were not clinical enough in the first half. It's excruciatingly painful. "I'm not sure why my hand is up there," he explained.
"The issue is that we don't score." This has happened several times this season. It all comes down to chance in the end, but the game changes if we score the chances we create. I felt a nudge, but the hand shouldn't be there.
"I'm going to have to take it on the chin." Even before the corner, the preceding free kick was never a foul. I'm not searching for excuses for what I did, but that should never have been considered a foul."
