This summer, Amad Diallo will return to Manchester United with the goal of catching manager Erik ten Hag's attention.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who cost Sunderland £19 million when he was acquired from Atalanta in January 2021, has been a standout of the Sky Bet Championship season after a less than stellar stint at Rangers in the second part of the previous year.
Les Parry, the loan manager for United, was in Wearside on Wednesday, and Black Cats head coach Tony Mowbray anticipates the Ivory Coast international will have a chance to shine in preseason. Mowbray previously said he hoped the loan agreement had been for two years.
"I believe Manchester United is pleased, but I believe the next step is for them to take him on pre-season to America," stated Mowbray. That's what I predict will happen. They will then monitor his progress.
"They know what they have; they bought him, but when the new manager arrived, I believe they were debating whether to keep him or not. He like some of it, but he may not have been so sure about other items.
"Just like I watch all of our players who are on loan, I'm sure he's been watching Amad's game tapes and seeing what he can do.
"But he'll need to see him every day and experience the benefits he brings. Everyone will undoubtedly have an opinion about whether he is good enough for Manchester United, but the manager really needs to watch him play in order to assess what he provides.
Prior to Monday's trip to Preston, Amad had made 39 appearances for Sunderland and had scored 12 goals. With a win, Sunderland could make the playoffs at the end of their first season back in the second tier.
