According to a poll by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), women make up two out of every three jobless people.

In addition, one in four young people is not in school, training, or employment, which causes the percentage of youth unemployment to increase from 19.7% to 25%.

According to the Ghana 2022 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Third Quarter Labor Force Report, over 1.7 million Ghanaians, or 13.2% of the labor force, were unemployed. Some of them were also multi-dimensionally poor and unable to find work or food to eat.

"1.7 million people are unemployed in Ghana at any given moment." Two out of every three of these people are women, according to government statistician Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, who was speaking at the report's introduction in Accra yesterday.

According to Prof. Annim's analysis of the data, female unemployment was caused by factors other than their gender.

Key points of the report

The report's figures on economic activity, employment, unemployment, young unemployment, education or training, and labor mobility across quarters were among its highlights.

In particular, it covered movements between and within economic sectors including agriculture, manufacturing, and services.

The survey also revealed a little increase of over 20,000 more people between the second and third quarters in the number of people who were multidimensionally poor and jobless, which remained at an average of roughly 615,000 across the three quarters.

"However, between the first and second quarters, the number of people who were jobless, food insecure, or multidimensionally poor decreased by 78,000 but increased by nearly 55,000 in the third quarter."

In the first three quarters of last year, about 157, 000 people experienced periods of unemployment, even though the number of unemployed people made up about 13.2% of the entire labor force.

Any time a person is unemployed for one or more days is referred to as a "spell of unemployment."

The conclusion is concerning for young people because a sizable portion of them were unemployed and neither in school nor in training.
