To stop the recurring flooding that occurs in the municipality of Klottey Korle, dredging and routine cleaning work have started.
Storm drains in Asomdwe Park, Asylum Down, and the trapezoidal drain at Ridge in Osu, as well as the Klottey Lagoon there, have all been cleaned and desilted.
Additionally, desilting and cleaning have been done to covered storm drains, underground culverts, and the open earth channel that runs alongside the Odawna Market and Sahara Park.
The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) is carrying out the exercise and funding it with money it has produced on its own.
Observation
The Daily Graphic has noted the desilting of various drains in the Adabraka region and other locations.
Additionally, the Asomdwe Park, Asylum Down, and Osu storm drains have all been sanitized using all of the site trash that was gathered.
regular dredging
Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of KoKMA, told the Daily Graphic that dredging the Klottey Lagoon was part of the organization's efforts to stop flooding during the rainy season.
He claimed that the exercises were also intended to solve the municipality's sanitary problems.
In order to allow for the free flow of water during rainstorms, he said that the assembly will routinely desilt and clean covered drains at Adabraka and Odawna, as well as storm drains at Osu.
However, Mr. Tawiah urged residents to stop disposing of solid waste down the drains because it was expensive to maintain them.
"The bulk of the locals continue to put their trash into the sewers despite the extensive teaching that has been done," he added, so this round of the exercises is more rigorous than usual.
He said that the assembly would endeavor to ensure that the drains were cleaned and desilted and that they would enforce the sanitation bye-laws by enforcing penalties against those who carelessly dropped trash down the drains.
Measures
According to the MCE, the municipality's geographic position caused water from the hilly regions to flow past it and into the sea, adding to the recurring floods.
He said that in order to remedy the issue, the assembly had dredged the Korle Lagoon, extended the majority of the drains that ran into the Odaw, and improved some additional drains at Osu and Adabraka.
He continued by saying that the assembly's Disaster Management Committee had also convened and put in place some measures, such as having a safe haven, to keep people safe throughout the rainy season.
Mr. Tawiah promised that the precautions being taken will help prevent the kinds of flooding that have in the past forced many residents of the municipality to flee their homes.
But he cautioned residents of extremely low-lying areas to take safety measures to safeguard their possessions.
"We will keep raising awareness of how people can be safe in their communities during the rainy season, even in the dry season, but people must also take precautions to protect their property," he added.
