The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has issued a warning that it will support the partial or whole revocation of the licenses of installation and wiring experts who collude with others to steal electricity.

The power distributor was implementing a number of initiatives to combat power theft, which was depriving the business of resources.

The Managing Director of ECG, Samuel Dubik Mahama, warned that anyone caught participating in that illegal act would face legal consequences at the graduation ceremony for 608 wiring and installing professionals held at the 18th certification awards of the Electrical Wiring Programme (EWP), which was organized by the Energy Commission.

He stated that multiple unauthorized connections in both business and residential buildings were found during ECG's revenue mobilization drive last month.

These were allegedly carried out with the help of some electrical contractors, technicians, wiring specialists, and occasionally ECG workers.

Therefore, we have decided to increase our surveillance and monitoring, and anyone found to be responsible would be dealt with in accordance with the law, Mr. Mahama said in a speech delivered on his behalf by Kojo Obeng Ayensu, his deputy in charge of engineering and operations.

Graduation

The 608 graduates have received certification to carry out a number of tasks associated with electrical wiring and inspection around the nation.

The graduates, who included two women, completed a variety of modules in the household, commercial, and industrial wiring certification tests to get their awards from the Electrical Wiring Certification Program run by the Energy Commission.

The program, which was launched in 2012 when the Ghana Electrical Wiring Regulations became an Act, celebrated its 10th anniversary during the graduation ceremony.

Its purpose was to assist experts working on electrical wiring and installation projects in carrying out their responsibilities and ensuring the safety of people and property.

Noble Akortia was selected as the program's overall top graduate.

Code of Conduct

The new experts were tasked by Mr. Mahama with adhering to the Ghana Electrical Wiring Standard (GS1009)'s recognized norms and professional code of conduct at all times.

Mr. Mahama also said that ECG and the Judicial Service were working together to expand the specialized utility court to increase its efficiency in prosecuting cases of power theft.

According to data acquired by the Daily Graphic, the bulk of judges who have been educated to manage power theft cases have either retired or been transferred; as a result, the two organizations have announced a new partnership to train additional judges to handle these cases.

In his remarks, Dr. Nicholas Kwabena Smart-Yeboah, a board member of ECG, praised the Energy Commission for the work it has done over the previous ten years to improve and sterilize the nation's electrical wiring regulations.
