Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has called for the depoliticization of entrepreneurship in the country in order to create an environment where entrepreneurs can thrive without being labeled or targeted. “When we politicise local enterprise, we create an uneven playing field that stifles innovation and discourages risk-taking.
When this occurs, "our indigenous businesses are made to struggle while foreign businesses stand tall and dominate our markets," he stated. He warned that this strategy would make it harder for indigenous businesses to compete and prevent sustainable growth. At the second Kwahu Business Forum held at Mpraeso in the Kwahu South District in the Eastern Region on Saturday, Mr. Afenyo-Markin, who is also the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region, made this statement. “The Future of Business: The Role of the Financial Sector” was the topic. Creativity
"We must celebrate enterprise and actively cultivate an environment where hard work and creativity are rewarded," the Majority Leader stated. It is not appropriate to view entrepreneurship through a political lens. A company's success should never be affected by the political regime in power or stifled by partisan labels. He stated, "Our role as political leaders is not to frustrate actors in the private sector, but to foster a just and enabling environment where merit, innovation, and hard work thrive." Additionally, Mr. Afenyo-Markin urged politicians to support young innovators and entrepreneurs based not on their political affiliation but rather on their potential, inventiveness, and drive. In order to build a nation that is just and competitive, he emphasized that the country's future should be built on merit rather than partisan loyalty. He added that opportunity should be extended to deserving individuals regardless of their political colours, to foster a truly progressive society.
The Minority Leader asserted that this strategy would contribute to the development of a nation in which talent and perseverance are rewarded rather than political loyalty. The future of Ghana must be built on merit, not partisan loyalty. Those who deserve opportunity should be given the opportunity, regardless of political affiliation.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated, "That is how we construct a nation that is truly progressive, competitive, and fair." Orientation
The Minority Leader also suggested establishing a National Orientation Program with the intention of reinvigorating Ghanaian citizens' sense of civic responsibility, discipline, hard work, and enterprise. He suggested that the program should be directed at young people in order to instill a new mindset that values hard work over shortcuts, merit over connections, and contribution over entitlement. He also stated that the program could have a transformative impact on reshaping national attitudes and fostering a culture of excellence that would be rewarded and sustained. Financial sector
The legislator from Effutu urged financial institutions to not only provide capital to local businesses but also to create opportunities that would enable these businesses to expand and, in the end, contribute to the creation of jobs nationwide. He also emphasised a need for the financial sector to adjust its approach and become more attuned to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), particularly those led by young Ghanaian entrepreneurs.
He continued, "We must develop financial products and solutions tailored to the specific challenges faced by our local businesses to bridge the gap between access to finance and entrepreneurial potential."
