Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe maintains that the club would only buy the "right players" as they continue their journey under new ownership - but will have to keep a strict watch on finances at the same time.
With five games left in the domestic season and a game in hand over fifth-placed Liverpool, the Magpies are inching closer to securing a spot in the Champions League. They welcome second placed Arsenal to St. James' Park this weekend.
Newcastle will undoubtedly need to plan ahead and with potential qualification for the Champions League coming ahead of schedule this season, thoughts will quickly turn to how they get their squad ready to fight with Europe's top.
substantial shareholders PIF are the wealthiest owners in the Premier League, and have already spent nearly a quarter of a billion pounds on players since taking over the club in late 2021.
Earlier this week, 90min reported that PIF was interested in signing Brazilian Neymar to the team because they believed it would be within their financial reach. Additionally, meeting FFP requirements for Champions League qualification will increase spending capacity.
In spite of being connected to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the same week, Howe is still cautious about potential targets and the funding for them.
"Since the takeover, everyone has naturally anticipated that Newcastle will attract the top players in world football. Now, we haven't conducted any such hiring. In the current financial climate, we are unable to hire in that manner, Howe stated in advance of the weekend matchup with Arsenal.
"But we also need to add the appropriate players and individuals to the team. The transfer market is really a difficult choice, I'll admit. There must be careful consideration given to what we're doing, both financially and in terms of the players. You can't just pick a name and bring them in.
"Because the players you mention are outstanding players, it doesn't annoy me. I don't waste time making assumptions. I am aware of the course I wish to lead the squad in.
