Otiko Afisa Djaba is a Ghanaian politician who served as the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection under the presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo from 2017 to 2018. However, she resigned from her position in September 2018 citing personal reasons.
In an interview with Joy News in 2020, Otiko Djaba revealed that leaving the Akufo-Addo government was the best decision she ever made. According to her, she was not comfortable with the way things were being run in the government and felt that her efforts to bring positive change were not being recognized.
Otiko Djaba had a vision of empowering women and children in Ghana, and as the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, she had initiated various programs aimed at achieving this goal. However, she felt that the government was not giving her enough support to carry out these programs effectively.
Furthermore, Otiko Djaba expressed her disappointment with the way politics was being played in Ghana, saying that it had become a game of insults and character assassination rather than a platform for genuine debate and development.
Despite her resignation from government, Otiko Djaba continued to work towards her vision of empowering women and children. She founded the Henry Djaba Memorial Foundation, named after her late father, which aims to provide educational and vocational training to young women and girls in Ghana.
Djaba also criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for not doing enough to promote women's participation in politics, despite the fact that the party's manifesto includes commitments to gender equality and women's empowerment. She urged the party to do more to support women who want to participate in politics and to provide equal opportunities for all members.
In conclusion, Otiko Djaba's decision to leave the Akufo-Addo government was a brave one, and she has continued to work towards her vision of empowering women and children in Ghana. Her story serves as a reminder that sometimes, the best decision one can make is to follow their conscience and do what they believe is right, even if it means going against the status quo.
