While some political commentators and economists have predicted that the economy will be a key issue in the general election of 2024, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former finance minister, thinks he has the knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to revive the faltering Ghanaian economy.
One of the three NDC presidential candidates, Dr. Duffuor, is seeking to lead the party in the 2024 general election. He is adamant that his message of empowerment for the party's grassroots has been well received by the party's delegates and will help him win the party's primary on May 13.
For the one position, he must compete with the late John Dramani Mahama and a former chief executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly.
The former finance minister is the third choice on the presidential primary ballot and is certain that the party's delegates will give him the green light to lead the group to victory in the 2024 election.
The race for flagbearership would be interesting if the recent report from the UK-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) was accurate in predicting that the NDC had a chance of winning the 2024 general election with a new candidate like the former Finance Minister, Dr. Duffuor.
Commitment
According to Dr. Duffuor, he is "the right leader at the right time" to take the largest opposition party into government and revive the economy of the nation.
The former finance minister reaffirmed his "research and experience-based assertion" that even if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration had severely damaged the economy, it was still possible to resuscitate it and set it on the path to recovery.
"We can do it again; we did it in 2009, and we should be able to create more jobs," he said.
He claimed that he decided to run for office in order to represent Ghanaians as a whole and contribute to the development of a powerful party that places a major emphasis on grassroots organizing.
When given the chance, "I will offer myself once more to serve the land of my birth with humility and sacrifice," he said.
"My fellow citizens, in my life, whenever I have been asked to serve my nation, I have done it promptly."
"In 2009, you appointed me to be the Republic's minister of finance and economic planning."
