Head of Mental Health Nursing at the University of Ghana, Dr Samuel Adjorlolo, has called on the government to prioritize mental health and increase interventions to tackle the issue. Dr Adjorlolo made the plea during a mental health literacy forum organized by the University of Ghana Chapter of the Community and Life Empowerment Advocacy Network, Ghana (CLEAN Ghana).
At the forum, Dr Adjorlolo emphasized the need for mental health to be brought to the forefront of public health policy to promote the mental well-being of the people. According to him, mental health has long been overlooked, with stigma, discrimination, and neglect playing a major role in keeping the issue in the shadows.
Dr Adjorlolo's call for greater attention to mental health comes at a time when many are struggling with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has had a profound impact on people's mental health, with many experiencing anxiety, depression, and other related issues.
In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of mental health, both in Ghana and globally. However, much more needs to be done to address the issue, including increasing access to mental health services and reducing the stigma associated with mental illness.
The CLEAN Ghana forum is one example of efforts being made to raise awareness about mental health and promote greater understanding of the issue. By bringing together experts, advocates, and community members, the forum aims to foster dialogue and collaboration around mental health issues and promote greater investment in mental health services.
As Dr Adjorlolo noted, it is time for mental health to be given the attention it deserves. With the right interventions and support, it is possible to promote greater mental well-being and improve the lives of millions of people in Ghana and beyond.
