Barcelona icon Lionel Messi has sent a warning to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Lionel Messi took an unapproved trip to Saudi Arabia on Monday, missing PSG training and receiving a two-week suspension from the club as a result.
Rivaldo, a Barcelona icon, has slammed Lionel Messi after the superstar was punished by Paris Saint-Germain for an unapproved trip to Saudi Arabia, drawing comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi's PSG teammates were shocked on Monday when he took an unauthorised excursion to the Middle East. The Argentine superstar is contractually required to visit the Gulf State as part of his duty as the country's tourist ambassador, but he did not notify anyone at PSG of his trip.
Many teammates were perplexed as to why the 35-year-old was not present when they came to practice on Monday. According to Mirror Football, the star is anticipated to depart PSG when his contract expires at the end of the current season. His contract renewal is no longer a priority for the club.
Messi, 35, was aware that he would be expected to train alongside his club teammates on Monday, as is standard procedure after a weekend loss. PSG were defeated 3-1 at home by Lorient in Ligue 1 over the weekend.
This defeat helped to widen the title race, with the out-of-form capital side behind Marseille by just five points heading into the league finale. Nonetheless, Messi has been suspended for two weeks, which means he will miss at least two games and will be unable to utilize the club's training facilities during that time.
"It made me a little sad to see Lionel Messi take this kind of attitude," Rivaldo said, according to Diario AS, adding that Messi would be upset if he moved to Saudi Arabia permanently, comparing himself to Ronaldo in Al-Nassr. "It was disrespectful to his current club, which is unusual in his career, which has always been distinguished by a clean sheet in terms of discipline."
"He could have done things differently." He could have talked to the club, waited for the Saudi leaders to travel to Paris, or even waited until the conclusion of the season to negotiate an agreement with PSG without provoking this internal difficulty."
