Steven Naismith is hoping that Josh Ginnelly's growth at Hearts will convince him to devote his future to the team.

In his third season with the Jambos, the former Burnley, Walsall, and Preston midfielder has established himself as a crucial player and is the Edinburgh team's second-leading scorer with 11 goals.

Ginnelly's contract expires at the end of the current campaign, so supporters want the team to sign the 26-year-old Englishman to a new one.

When asked for a status update, interim manager Naismith responded, "I'm not sure if he will stay or go. "I believe the team will want to retain him. He's had the most stable season since joining the team.He started off as a new man with positive traits, built his consistency, and eventually developed into a more seasoned character in the group during the years he's been here. All of these things have benefited him and the club. The reason he moved up to Hearts is that in his past movements, he has signed on thinking one thing and it rapidly changed into something else, which has not been helpful for him and has prevented him from playing his best.

"I believe that this time in his career has been the most enjoyable. Gino must make a choice because the club is undoubtedly attempting to keep him.

After Robbie Neilson was fired by Hearts last month as they looked for a new permanent manager, Naismith was given the job until the end of the current campaign.

The 36-year-old said when asked if he had any say in which of the club's out-of-contract players they would try to keep: "I offer recommendations and stuff like that, but at the same time those players may have been speaking to clubs since January.

Given that the players' contracts are up at the end of the season, it has been made plain that decisions will not be taken until then.

Although it is yet unknown whether Naismith will be a part of the new managerial structure, he has been assisting in the preparation of a preseason.

"There needs to be a program there in terms of pre-season," he remarked. "Whether I manage the team or someone else does, if we don't have that by the summer, we're in serious problems because you won't have the preseason travel or schedule you want.
