The idea that Lionel Messi has 'limited options' when it comes to his next move will be difficult for football fans to understand.
Set to leave Paris St-Germain when his contract expires this summer, Messi is on the hunt for his next club - six months after he inspired Argentina's World Cup victory in Qatar. The 35-year-old has failed to agree in principle to spend an extra year with the Ligue 1 side - with the club also wanting to part ways.
Messi's numbers at PSG are stark - 31 goals and 34 assists in 71 games - and he has shown his ability to play at his highest level yet again in Qatar in the winter. This. However, financial difficulties at the Parc des Princes pushed him to a new challenge. PSG's summer transfer budget may be cut to comply with Financial Fair Play.
And so, this once-popular player suddenly appeared in the store - the journey was not over. It is said that a romantic return to Barcelona would please Messi, but the La Liga giants are having financial problems of their own and so a return to the homeland is highly unlikely. MLS side Inter Miami, managed by former Manchester United player Phil Neville, and Saudi outfit Al-Hilal - who can offer £354m for a season - are both interested.
But Messi's next destination is uncertain. He aspires to play at the highest level possible, like former rival Cristiano Ronaldo when he left Manchester United.
The pair have dominated football for the past 15 years - two world stars who have created unforgettable moments and won trophies together. It's hard to imagine a game without both in the limelight, but with Ronaldo leaving him last December, the prospect of Messi following in the footsteps seems possible. Maybe after all, the couple still needed each other.
