HUGO LLORIS HAS BEEN THE IDEAL REPRESENTATION OF TOTTENHAM'S ASCENT AND DESCENT TILL THE VERY END.

"Hugo is finished for the year. We received the outcomes. Obviously frustrating, but to be honest, we kind of anticipated that. Hugo Lloris, the club captain, won't be playing for Tottenham again this season, interim manager Ryan Mason declared on Friday.

The Frenchman hurt his thigh in the middle of Newcastle United's 6-1 thrashing of Tottenham last month. It might be his last contest with the team.

According to 90min, the north Londoners will want to replace their current goalkeeper in the summer transfer market. Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia, David Raya of Brentford, Diogo Costa of Porto, and Andre Onana of Inter are all possible targets.

Although Lloris still has one year left on his contract, signing a new goalkeeper implies that Tottenham no longer requires their existing captain.

That contract was reasonable when he signed it in January 2022, at least in part. Antonio Conte, the newly appointed head coach, needed stability and leadership even if he wasn't yet in a sharp decline and wasn't an Alisson or an Ederson.

But like most of the Italian's decisions, this one has ultimately hurt Spurs this season. Lloris has frequently shown to be a sign of where Tottenham has stood as a team at any particular time. Is this just a coincidence?

To the amazement of fans around Europe, he first joined Spurs on the final day of the summer 2012 transfer window. Lloris was one of the best young goalkeepers on the continent, but he had chosen a team at that time that was well below the elite.

It took him some time to even replace Brad Friedel, who had the exact opposite goalkeeping approach from him—he was a stickler for position and was only particularly effective at communicating and preventing shots. To put things in perspective, the American is currently 51 years old.

Lloris was the shining symbol of Tottenham's new age; they had hired Andre Villas-Boas as a young coach to take over for Harry Redknapp, signed the exceptional Mousa Dembele to cover Luka Modric's void, and had recently moved into a cutting-edge training facility.
