The government of the Republic of Ghana has confided the media for their vital part in promoting public development in the country. In a statement which was released by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, to mark World Press Freedom Day on the 3rd day of May, 2023, the government of the country expressed profound appreciation for the media’s vase contributions to the progress that they have made in the Ghanaian economy.
The theme which has been used for this year's celebration of World Press Freedom Day is 'Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a driver for All Other Human Rights.' The government’s statement emphasised on the need for a stronger focus on the rights of the economy irrespective of the recent global challenges.
The media has played a critical aspect in drawing attention to numerous rights which require the greatest focus in order to ensure their full enjoyment', the statement read. "By highlighting cases of rights abuse by certain sections of society, the media has contributed to redress in numerous cases. We urge the media to remain loyal in this endeavor." He commended the good works of the media about the substantial progress that are made towards ensuring national development in the country.
He also stated that despite the progress that had been made by the media, access to economic rights remains deficient, particularly in the wake of recent global economic challenges. The government thus called on the media to increase their potential efforts in order to ensure that, all citizens have full access to their economic rights in the country.
The government, while encouraging the media to continue to shine a limelight on all rights of human, we prompt them to indeed pay greater attention to realising the economic rights of our citizens in the country, ” he added.
The recognition of the media's contributions to public development by the government is a sign of significant endorsement of the pivotal role plays by the media in promoting accountability, transparency and also, good governance within the country.
