Nigeria's social media platforms are seething with discussions of racism, sparked by a recent post from Italy's popular top league, Serie A.

The controversy erupted when the official Serie A Twitter account shared an image of the late Diego Maradona crowning Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, with the caption declaring: 'A new king crowned in Naples'.

The message seems to imply that Maradona, a deceased football legend, has handed the title of Napoli's new star player to Kvaratskhelia.

However, the Nigerians were less than impressed with the offer as they felt it undermined the key contributions of Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen in Napoli's Italian league title this season.

Maradona, forever revered as the iconic number 10 of the Partenopei, is revered at many official and unofficial shrines. He is revered not only for ending the dominance of the northern football giants. More than three decades ago, Maradona led lower division Napoli to two Serie A titles and UEFA club competitions. An outstanding player, his unparalleled football genius inspired the Gli Azzurri to surpass Juventus, Milan and Inter with his unparalleled ability.

Meanwhile, Osimhen won the hearts of Napoli supporters even before his decisive goal last Thursday. With an impressive record of 23 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions, he played a pivotal role in bringing Napoli to the historic Scudetto title.

Here are some tweets highlighting what Nigerians had to say about the message. However, you have to give it to the Italians, they are consistent with https racism:

After Victor Osimhen became Serie A's top scorer this season, Africa's top scorer in a single season in Serie A history. Then Serie A came up with this to crown a winner. Nameless King

But for us VICTOR OSIMHEN IS OUR KING

Say no to racism pic.twitter.com/9urMeIoDy2

Lol.. Some people asked Yoruba about 'Ronu' during the last election accusing Serie A of racism. ??

The most forgetful group of hypocrites are Nigerians.

The recent uproar surrounding the release of Serie A on Nigerian social media highlights the sensitivity and passion with which Nigerians engage in discussions about football. As discussions continue, it is important to foster an understanding and appreciation of the contributions of all players, while promoting inclusiveness and unity in the world of football.
