Below are sample Mathematics questions and answers on sets for BECE and WASSCE candidates who are preparing for their final examination. You can use the questions for both Section A and Section B. (1) S is a  universal set with elements {1,3,5,7,11,13} and set T ={3,7,11}. Which of the following describes the relationship between the universal set and set T?

A. {1,5,13} is a complementary of T

B. {1,3,5,13} is a Union set of set S and T

C. {1,3,5} is a Union set of set S and T

D. None of the above

Correct answer is A.


Explanation

The correct answer is A which shows that {1,5,13} is a complement of T. Complement set  are those elements in the universal set that are not in the main set in question.


Solution

S= {1,3,5,7,11,13}

T={3,7,11}  o complement set of T hence, the correct answer is option A.


Two sets, X and Y have X={1,2,3,4,5,6} and Y={2,4,6,8,10} members respectively. Use it to answer question 2-3.


(2) Which of the following is true of set X and Y?

A. XnY={1,3,5}

B. XUY={1,2,3,4,5,6,}

C. Both A and B

D. XnY={2,4,6}

Correct answer is D.


Explanation

Option D gives the correct answer of set X and Y. Intersection set are all elements that are in both members of the set.


Solution

X ={1,2,3,4,5,6}

Y ={2,4,6,8.10}

XnY ={ 2,4,6} hence, the correct answer is option D.


(3) The union of both set is given by .....

A. XUY ={1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10}

B. XUY ={2,3,4,5,6.8,10}

C. XUY ={1,2,3,4,5,6,8.10}

D. XUY ={2,4,6,8,10}

Correct answer is C.


Explanation

The union of a set is the  combination of the members of set without considering common members or elements.


Solution

X={1,2,3,4,5,6}

Y={2,4,6,8,10}

XUY={1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.10} hence the correct answer is option C.


4. A set M={even numbers less than 20} and another set N={1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21}. How many elements are present in set M intersection N?

A. 5

B. 0

C. 2

D. 12

Correct answer is B


Explanation

Given a question like this, students are expected to list the elements found in set M and afterwards, find the intersection set of both set M and N. The intersection set are the elements that are common between the two sets M and N.

After getting your intersection set, count the number of elements and use it to select the correct answer from the options given.

M={2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18}

N={1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19,21}

M intersection N; MnN={}

The intersection of the two sets will give you an empty set. This is because, between the two sets M and N, they do not share any elements in common. Therefore, the number of elements in the intersection set M and N is 0. Hence, the correct answer is B.


(5) Which is the number of elements of the set in union set?

A. 10

B. 8

C. 4

D. 7

Correct answer is D.


Explanation

To find the number of elements of the union set, first find XuY and count the members in that set. 


Solution

X ={2,5,8,12}

Y ={2,3,4,6}

n(XuY)= 7 hence the correct answer is option D.
